Um... okay?

  1. Not getting the connection to bipolar. Dancing's the treatment? Maybe I'm thick.

Yeah, you know the dancing ordinance goes back to anti-prostitution laws (in Japan... that's a laugh), and like the rest of those is a way to take down bits of the mob who haven't kept their place, or to shake down the same or freelancers for some baksheesh. When I wasted any time at such places in 'the Pong' saw plenty of dancing. Hell, in the Bubble-echo days when I was here girls were doing 'fan-dances' with little else than the fan...

    1. The quote of the day (up top) was taken from Japan Today on January 15.

For some reason, the idea of Tokyo as the most forward-thinking world on the planet isn't something many of the comments agree with. That quote is already yesterday's news, kind of like today's regarding The Tomorrow Party, which reads "I shouldn't have believed him".

The social policies and their enforcement are at odds with the reality. Though this is nothing new nor unique, it is a disturbing. Devil's in the details, so to speak.

Either way, the people will dance.

Oh yeah - something you might enjoy - if you do read the comments from yesterday, they do talk about bicycles.

    2. Whole lot of contempt in those comments at 'Japan Today', but what can I say? You've read some of the $#!+ I say about Japan... The bloom is most certainly off the Japanese rose. Wonder where 'the West's next focus for Orientalism is?

    3. Orientalism... don't hear that word too often. Without falling into denial, I would like to be able to navigate though my more contemptuous moments. (reaches for a paddle)
Time to let off a bit of steam.

  2. I saw something on the Huff Post which is like an infotainment site to me and they closed the comments on an essay about how Japan's Financial problem is a myth and everything is fine.

I think the world is just an enabler like a friendly dope man to Japan...I don't know why they ignore reality like blatant racism, sexism and sexual exploitation of the youth but they do it....blows the mind....wtf is going on??

    1. My guess is that the ignorance is due, in part, to a very deliberate type of propaganda spread through soft power. That and an undercurrent that can be described as a type of superiority infused guilt-complex that is related to the left-leaning Huff Post.

(Hope everyone puts their boots on before reading any further: Bullshit Alert!)

What else could be going on is that with the inevitable dissolution of the beloved Article 9, Japan will be used as a buffer, by the US, for the upcoming conflicts. So maybe (it's getting deep)... maybe that's why the right-leaning mindset isn't all that motivated to spread the word about the blatant realities that you refer to.

In terms of dynamics around how the left views Japan, I see anyone progressive on the left who does raise questions about the past facing difficulties similar to that of Seth Rosenfeld when he first tried to have a discussion about the late Richard Aoki.

In terms of dynamics around how the right views Japan, I see anyone progressive on the right who raises questions about the present facing accusations of lack of patriotism. And all that which follows for people who make such public statements.

Right, left, or center... sifting through information is a daunting task. This is where I believe accountability comes into play when dealing with sources.

      Historical memories are a bitch.

I wonder how many people have even heard about the Ni'ihau incident. As well as a few other things will be getting some attention in the next post or two.

      Anyway...

    2. "the pilot... then shot Ben Kanahele three times: in the groin, stomach, and upper leg. Ben Kanahele then picked Nishikaichi up in the same manner that he picked up the sheep that were commercially raised on the island, hurling Nishikaichi into a stone wall."

They don't make men like Ben anymore. Shit...

    3. Thank you.

In the next post, peripheral links will be provided to a number of articles up on the Net about the incident which, as you demonstrate, is easy to find information on.

And although I'm really interested in reading Allan Beekman's book, 'The Niihau Indicent', the post-in-planning isn't about that particular event.

I'll try and take some time this afternoon to get it done.

    4. Make that the post after the next post.

  3. How can you host the 2020 Olympics if no dancing is allowed? Don't gymnasts do some sort of interpretive dance/tumble routine? Ice skating is kind of like ballroom dancing on skates... ok maybe that's a stretch. But not allowing dancing doesn't sound very trendy to me. Also some of the benefits of dancing include a better sense of well being. SO if dancing was allowed maybe there wouldn't be as much of a need for a "pill to fix" bipolar disorder.

    1. Gymnastic and ice skating are both a bit of a stretch.

Ahem... if Tokyo really is forward thinking, I wonder in which direction. Have a feeling more dancing would somehow do something to help give the birthrate a boost.

Clubs just about everywhere in the world are understood to be connected to certain elements. As Ant suggests, this probably has more to do with certain organizations than anything else.

If the Olympics are held in Tokyo, I imagine there will be quite a lot of activity going on in and around the athletic villages. But the mention of Tokyo as the world's most forward-thinking city is kind of hard to imagine considering who had been elected to man the helm until just recently.

People will keep dancing. Rather that than marching.

    1. NOT making any reference to Footloose in a post like this was nearly impossible, one of the biggest reasons it is strictly a collage.
